Entry Requirements for the United Kingdom

Everything you need to know before travelling to Great Britain 🇬🇧

UK Entry Requirements Overview

The United Kingdom's entry requirements depend on your nationality, purpose of visit, and intended length of stay. Since Brexit, rules have changed significantly — here is a comprehensive guide.

Important Notice

Entry requirements can change at any time. Always check the official UK Government website (gov.uk) before travelling for the most up-to-date information applicable to your specific nationality.

1. Passport Requirements

All visitors to the UK (except Irish citizens) must hold a valid passport. Key requirements include:

  • Your passport must be valid for the duration of your planned stay
  • EU/EEA citizens: a valid national identity card is no longer accepted for travel to the UK (post-Brexit)
  • It is recommended that your passport has at least 6 months validity remaining at time of travel
  • Your passport must not be damaged or altered in any way
  • Children travelling with parents must have their own valid passport

The UK ETA costs £16 per application. It is linked electronically to your passport and valid for multiple trips over 2 years, or until your passport expires.

How to Apply

Apply via the official UK ETA app or website at gov.uk. The process takes approximately 5–10 minutes. Most decisions are made within 3 working days.

Apply in Advance

Always apply for your ETA at least 1 week before travel to allow time for processing. Do not leave it until departure day.

  • Show proof of sufficient funds for your stay
  • Declare any restricted or prohibited items at customs

  • Carrying any prescribed medications with a GP letter if controlled substances
  • Being aware of the NHS (National Health Service) for emergencies — free at point of use for visitors in some cases
