Your complete guide to obtaining the UK Electronic Travel Authorisation 🇬🇧
The United Kingdom has introduced the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) — a new pre-travel permission required for many travellers who do not currently need a visa to visit the UK.
The ETA is a digital travel authorisation linked electronically to your passport. It does not replace your passport — instead, it grants permission to travel to the UK before you board a flight, train or ferry. It is similar in concept to the US ESTA or Canada's eTA.
£16 per application. A government service fee applies to processing.
Valid for 2 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. Multiple entries permitted.
Most applications receive a decision within 3 working days. Apply at least 1 week before travel.
Each visit: up to 6 months for tourism, visiting family, or business activities.
The ETA is required for non-visa-required nationals who do not hold a valid UK visa or British/Irish passport. This includes citizens of:
Visit the official UK Government website (gov.uk) to confirm whether you require an ETA, a Standard Visitor Visa, or no authorisation at all. Your nationality and travel history may affect eligibility.
Before applying you will need: a valid passport, an email address, a payment card (credit/debit), and potentially a recent photograph. Ensure your passport details are correct.
Apply via the official UK ETA app (available on iOS and Android) or through the gov.uk website. The form asks for personal details, passport information, travel plans, and some background questions. The form takes approximately 5–10 minutes to complete.
Pay the £16 ETA fee securely online using a credit or debit card. This is a government fee — be cautious of third-party websites charging higher fees for the same service.
Most applications receive a decision within 3 working days. You will receive an email notification. The ETA is linked to your passport electronically — there is no physical document or stamp.
Present your passport at UK border control — the border officer will be able to see your ETA digitally. Always carry a copy of your ETA confirmation email just in case.
If your nationality requires a full UK visa (not just an ETA), you will need to apply for a Standard Visitor Visa. This is an eVisa — a digital visa with no physical sticker in your passport (from April 2024 onwards).
